Effort isn’t always the problem. Sometimes you need a different strategy — and the courage to admit it.
You know when something is off. The work product isn’t where it needs to be.
You think, scrambling: “I need more structure. More discipline. More accountability.”
You tighten your grip, and you double down.
The quiet assumption you’re making? That the problem is effort. “If I just hold myself to a higher bar, it will come together.”
But will it?
Clinging to your own high bar when “it” isn’t working doesn’t make you disciplined. It makes you stuck.
Take another look: does the situation call for more, or different? Because effort will get you more. But different requires clarity, and clarity requires a pause.
It takes courage to pause. Because you might not like what you see when you do.
Face it anyway.
The high bar for effort is one of your most powerful tools. So is knowing when to set effort down and reach for clarity instead.
Questions for Reflection
- When the work isn’t where you want it, what’s your first move?
- Have you ever kept pushing past the point where it was serving you? What did that cost?
- What would it mean to treat the pause as the action rather than doing more of the same?
